Banksy

BACK

Banksy is an anonymous British street artist who has been known to include his political views and social commentary in his art. His work first started appearing in the 1990s as freehand graffiti in the Bristol area, in the early 2000’s Banksy then started stencilling which enhanced his speed. He then went on to create bigger murals.

In 2005 at his “Crude Oils” exhibition in London he replicated Vincent van Gogh, Edward Hopper and Monet's Water Lily Pond, where he added litter and a shopping trolley.

At Sotheby’s in 2018, we saw Banksy’s famous “Girl with Balloon” shred itself when the gavel went down at almost $1.4 million, leaving many shocked and confused.

Banksy's style is said to derive from French graffiti artist Blek le Rat who also uses stencils to create his pieces.

Banksy has been known to cut out the middle man. In 2005, in disguise, he snuck in and installed his own pieces on the walls of major museums in New York and London, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and Tate Britain.
