Barry Flanagan Biography and Art for SaleBarry Flanagan was a leading Welsh artist born to a family of music hall performers. He is known for his bronze sculptures of biomorphic forms, often featuring hares and other animals. Barry Flanagan’s art is based on everyday objects, animals and people, which he reworks into sculptural forms.

Flanagan first became prominent in the 1960s with his large-scale installations made from organic materials such as clay and sand. He later began working with more traditional media, such as bronze.

Born in Prestatyn, North Wales, in 1941, Flanagan studied architecture at Birmingham College of Arts and Crafts and sculpture at Saint Martin's School of Art in London. From 1967 to 1971, Flanagan taught at St. Martin’s School of Art and the Central School of Arts and Crafts.

His maiden solo show was held at the Rowan Gallery in London in 1966, and he went on to have solo and group exhibitions at major galleries and museums worldwide. Barry Flanagan’s art reflects his interest in tango and other forms of music. He was an accomplished dancer himself, and his sculptures often incorporate elements of dance. He received several prestigious awards throughout his career, including the Royal Academy of Arts and the OBE in 1991.

Widely known for his ambiguous, often mythological subjects, Barry Flanagan’s art is characterised by a sense of playfulness. His sculptures often take on an anthropomorphic quality, with animals appearing to engage in human activities. Flanagan’s work challenges traditional notions of sculpture and is considered one of his generation’s most influential British artists. He created the well-known Hare sculptures, which are based on the hare’s natural form but have been reimagined by Flanagan. These sculptures are among his most notable works and have become icons of British art.

Barry Flanagan died in 2009 at the age of 68. His work is held in several collections around the world, in cities such as New York, London, Madrid, Dublin, and Chicago.
